Next month, I am heading to the IEEE 802 March Plenary in Orlando, Fl to lead a call-for-interest to start 400 Gb/s Ethernet (400 GbE).  Needless to say, there is a lot of industry interest, and I have been asked to speak at several events over the coming year to talk about Ethernet's latest step.  I have also been engaging in conversations regarding the decision to pursue 400 GbE, rather than Terabit Ethernet.  Given my history with the decision of the prior 40 Gigabit Ethernet and 100 Gigabit Ethernet, you would think I would be used to this, but to be honest, it's been on my mind constantly.

"We are the music makers, and We are the dreamers of dreams."

This is a line from 1971's "Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory," which is actually a quote from    Arthur O'Shaughnessy's "Music and Moonlight" (1874).  While the focus of this blog is the next rate of Ethernet and not snozberries, this line has been rattling around in my head.  It seems appropriate given all of the conversations regarding the next rate.

Let's face it- we can all agree we would like the next speed to be as high as possible to put off doing another "Higher Speed" for as long as possible.  But making a statement like that in the absence of any discussion about cost is truly for the dreamers.  The simple reality is that the solution has to make sense for the entire eco-system.  I personally don't believe in the concept of doing "what is right" while at the same time not considering all affected parties.  Therefore, when we talk about the next rate, we have to factor in the concepts of cost and return on investment.  Ultimately, a solution is needed that is at the right cost for customers while providing a return on investment that the supply base can rationalize.  So, it is not a matter as one colleague blogged, that doing Terabit Ethernet is too hard.  It is a matter of "doing Terabit Ethernet at the right cost" that is the real challenge.  These cost considerations when contemplating potential solutions are what have driven industry interest in doing 400 GbE.  Furthermore, given forecasted bandwidth trends, a solution beyond 100 GbE is needed for the Ethernet market.
